New York Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor has been quite the colorful interviewee ever since he signed with the club in free agency earlier this year.
However, this week, he may have crossed a line with his comments following the Giants’ 26-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night.
Prior to the game, Eluemunor, who was dealing with a hip injury, faced doubts about his abilities as he prepared to go up against Steelers All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt.
In response to those doubters, Eluemunor confidently stated that he had faced Watt before and was fully prepared for the challenge.
“I want to be matched up against T.J. Watt all game long,” Eluemunor told the media last week.
Despite Eluemunor putting up a decent performance in the game, Watt managed to make significant plays that ultimately led to the Giants’ defeat.
During his appearance on WFAN radio the following day, Eluemunor remained steadfast in his belief that he outperformed Watt.
“I was matched up against him for most of the game, and he didn’t really have much of an impact. I’m not going to go out of my way to praise him,” Eluemunor told the hosts. “He only had one big play after being quiet for most of the game.”
While Eluemunor may feel he got the better of Watt, it’s often the one standout play that gets remembered. In the NFL, offensive linemen typically receive attention only when they make mistakes.
Watt graciously responded to the situation without directly addressing Eluemunor by name.
“I have respect for every player in the NFL. Everyone works hard, and I just try to take advantage of my opportunities when they come,” he stated.
Watt’s final stats for the game included six pressures, 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, all of which had a significant impact on the Giants’ struggling offense.
