NEW YORK LIBERTY fans at Barclays Center once again cheered for Tina Charles grabbing a rebound on Thursday night.
In a game on Thursday night at Barclays Center, former New Yorker Tina Charles became the WNBA’s all-time leader in rebounds with her third rebound, totaling 4,013 in her career by the end of the first half. She surpassed Sylvia Fowles to claim the most boards in Association history.
Charles, a Queens native who skipped the 2023 WNBA season, has made a remarkable comeback on the court. She gained recognition at Christ the King High School in Queens and won two national championships at the University of Connecticut.
After playing six seasons with the Liberty from 2014-2019 before being traded to Washington in 2020, Charles remains the franchise’s leading scorer (3,739) and rebounder (1,723), holding several top records in New York.
“This is where it all began for me, born and raised, played all over New York,” Charles said before a game between New York and Atlanta in June. “I’m grateful for the people who helped me get to this point in my career, including family, friends, coaches, and teammates.”
Later in Thursday’s game, Charles surpassed another record she shares with Fowles by achieving her 195th double-double with eight points and nine rebounds in the first half.
At halftime, Atlanta leads New York 43-30. A win for Charles and the Dream will secure the eighth seed in the WNBA playoffs and set up a first-round series with the top-ranked Liberty starting on Sunday.
