TEMPE, Ariz. – Recently graduated senior Nibi Ghosh was named the national ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner, the organization announced today. Ghosh, who earlier this week was named the Midwest Region award recipient for the same award, is only the second player in program history to earn the honor (Monica Robinson – 2017) after becoming the sixth Irish in history to win the regional accolade on Tuesday.
“Congratulations to Nibi Ghosh on receiving the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, a well-deserved honor!” head coach Alison Silverio said. “She embodies the spirit of the award as a model of complete development whose emotional intelligence, creative confidence and relentless competitiveness have made her an exceptional teammate and a leader of uncommon grace and clarity.”
Ghosh, a native of Kendall Park, New Jersey, posted a dominant senior season. She recorded a 21-5 singles record and 19-11 doubles record during the fall and spring seasons combined. During the spring, she was 12-1 (.923) at singles, the fourth-best winning percentage in Irish history en route to her third-straight second round appearance in the NCAA tournament with Notre Dame. The Irish as a team posted the most wins since 2012 (21) and notched the most ACC wins since joining the conference in 2014 (9).
Beyond her athletic achievements, Ghosh has made a lasting impact across campus. She served three years on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), including a term on the executive board, and was a co-lead of Together Irish, driving diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Her community service includes mentoring through the Boys and Girls Club and the Fighting Irish Fight for Life, supporting children with pediatric cancer.
The Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award is presented to a student-athlete at the Division I, II and III and NAIA and JUCO levels who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements in ways of tennis icon and humanitarian Arthur Ashe Jr.
