Nine questions for Jenny Simpson!

Jenny Simpson has recently retired. She is known as the most decorated American middle-distance runner in recent history, with three World Championship medals (gold in Daegu 2011, silver in Moscow 2013 and London 2017) and one Olympic medal (bronze in London 2017). Jenny has always been a great interviewee. Thanks to Stuart Weir, RunBlogRun’s European editor, for sharing this interview!

This interview with Jenny Simpson, put together, curated, and edited by Stuart Weir, celebrates her remarkable career.

Nine questions for Jenny Simpson*

How did you get into running?

I started running in elementary school when I was very young. I participated in small races – kids’ races, road races, or track meets – since third grade.

Do you recall your first race?

Absolutely. I do, because a girl named Brittany won and I came in second. We were both third graders. It was a close finish where we both gave our all. It was my first race with 100 kids, and it was a memorable moment from when I was 9 years old. [It’s even amusing to think that after all her achievements, she still remembers the name of that 9-year-old who beat her.]

How do you cope with injuries?

Dealing with injuries is always tough. Despite seeing many athletes get injured, recover, return to the sport, and perform well again, there’s always a doubt. When you’re injured, you wonder if you’ll ever be healthy again. So, managing these tough times is about staying calm and believing in yourself. You need to push through the rough days to appreciate the good ones.

You have competed in 1500, 3000, Cross Country, and road-running. Which is your favorite?

My true passion is cross country. That’s where I began and where my heart lies; I love competing in cross country races. The one-on-one battles in cross country races, the ever-changing courses, and enduring different weather conditions all speak to me and ignite my competitive spirit. However, track will always hold a special place in my heart. Track has given me opportunities on the world stage, and winning the world championship in the 1500 was a significant achievement for me.

What are your thoughts on volunteering?

Being involved in the community is essential for our well-being and outlook on life. I have always engaged with my community wherever I’ve been, whether through refugee services in Boulder, Colorado, or my local church. Building up others is crucial for personal growth, and community service is a fundamental aspect of my life.

Can you discuss the role of faith in your life?

As a Christian, attending church with my husband and family has helped me navigate through challenging and successful times. Knowing that there’s a greater joy beyond myself gives me peace and motivates me to be a good steward of my abilities. Following my faith has made a significant difference in my life by reminding me to invest in human connections and eternal treasures.

How do you reflect on the Monaco 2015 race?

Monaco was a challenging race as I was preparing for the World Championship. Despite not achieving what I aimed for that day, races like Monaco were crucial steps leading to the most significant event of the year. Each race, even if it doesn’t go as planned, is a building block towards the final goal of the world championships.

What about the Fifth Avenue mile, where you have been unbeatable? [8 wins]

Running the Fifth Avenue mile is special to me as it allows me to end my long season back in the United States, amidst American culture and a vibrant running community. It’s a fitting end to the year and something I always look forward to.

You have shown great versatility in various events. What motivates you to excel in different disciplines?

I enjoy being proficient in multiple areas. When I speak to kids, I encourage them to explore different talents and not limit themselves to just one skill. I like demonstrating this in my running career by engaging in various events like marathons, steeplechases, and the 1500. Each event presents its unique challenges and rewards, contributing to my overall growth as an athlete.

The 1500 is a challenging, marquee event that demands intense effort and endurance, making it a fulfilling pursuit for me.
