Los Angeles – No. 1 UConn used strong defense and interior scoring to dominate No. 16 USC, 79-51, Saturday.
Azzi Fudd lead four Huskies in double figures with 17 points, while Ashlynn Shade added 15 and Sarah Strong, 14. The visitors outshot and out-rebounded their opponents while they snapped their 20-game winning streak and retained their unbeaten season record.
Serah Williams and freshman reserve Blanca Quinonez paced UConn to begin the game, with 6 points a piece, while the entire team held the Trojans to single-digit scoring in each of the first two periods.
Despite USC picking up their pace in the third quarter, the Huskies stretched their lead to as much as 39 points more than halfway through. They let their shooting lapse in the final frame, as UConn coach Geno Auriemma inserted several reserve players.
Kennedy Smith lead the Trojans with 16 points, while Londynn Jones scored 14 and Jazzy Davidson added 10.
Fudd had high praise for Quinonez’s performance.
“When you have someone like her coming off the bench and can just bring that spark, it’s like the first group is playing well, and then she comes in, and it’s like a whole other level,” Fudd said.
Smith said her team would work on sustained effort over 40 minutes for the next week and a half.
“No matter if we’re down or not, playing with your heart, playing hard from start to finish is something that we need to take and carry over,” Smith said. “We’re about to go into Big Ten play soon, and the games are not going to get easier.”
