WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Carly Martin led all scorers with 21 points while grabbing a season-high eight rebounds to guide the No. 13 Whitman College women’s basketball team to a 64-50 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday night at the Sherwood Center.
Korin Baker contributed 19 points and six rebounds for the Blues, who improved their record to a flawless 8-0. Overcoming a slow start, they dominated the second quarter by outscoring the Cru 21-3, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Jaycie Brisco led UMHB with 16 points and 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to halt Whitman’s second-quarter surge. Natalie Lundberg’s basket was Whitman’s lone score in the first five minutes, but the Blues rallied and were only down by three points by the end of the quarter.
Christian Carlisle ignited the Blues with a three-pointer, launching an 18-0 run in the second quarter. Martin also shined in the quarter, going on an 11-0 run highlighted by one of her three three-pointers in the game.
In the second half, Whitman extended their lead to 19 points in the third quarter but struggled against UMHB’s press in the fourth quarter. Despite forcing 21 turnovers, UMHB couldn’t overcome Whitman’s lead as the Blues sealed the win with baskets by Baker and Holly Morgan in the final minutes.
Whitman faces another undefeated team, Lewis-Clark State, on Friday at the Sherwood Center for a quick turnaround. Tipoff is at 5:00 p.m.
