TACOMA, Wash. – Korin Baker was her usual dominant self, putting up game highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds to guide the No. 5 Whitman College women’s basketball team to a 71-46 win at Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.
Lindsey Drango added 13 points and seven boards for the Blues (17-1, 9-0 NWC) whose perfect run through the NWC continued into the second round. Carly Martin put up 11 points and five assists and Baker chipped in two assists and two blocks to her already impressive line.
Brandie Tobin led the Lutes (7-11, 4-5 NWC) with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Whitman won every quarter but set the tone for the game by outscoring PLU by 13 points in the opening period. Emi Wada scored the game’s opening basket for the Lutes but what followed was a 13-0 run by the Blues ignited by back-to-back three-point plays from Baker and Christiane Carlisle.
The momentum continued into the second quarter when Jordan Leith stole an errant pass and took the ball all the way to the hoop to put Whitman up 23-8 with 7:05 to play until halftime. Leith again hit from the floor and late in the quarter Baker converted another three-point play and the Blues took a 16-point lead into the break.
The third quarter saw an early 8-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer and a layup from Drango. Martin’s bucket with 3:03 to play put the Blues up by 23 points as they cruised to the win.
Whitman closes the weekend with a Saturday game at the University of Puget Sound. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
