SALEM, Ore. – Carly Martin scored a game-high 21 points, Korin Baker was one rebound shy of a double with 10 points and nine rebounds, and the No. 5 Whitman College women’s basketball team rallied from a big first quarter deficit to race past Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.
The win keeps the Blues (19-1, 11-0 NWC) undefeated in league play and a full three games ahead of Linfield for the top spot in the conference. Natalie Lundberg scored seven points and grabbed eight boards, and Holly Morgan chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks off the bench.
Kaitlin Imai and Daisy Boling-Schmidt carried the load offensively for the Bearcats, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. They were no match for Whitman’s firepower, however, as the Blues, after struggling in the opening 10 minutes, rebounded to shoot 46% for the game.
The Bearcats dropped a hammer on the Blues in the opening quarter. The Blues scored only two field goals in the quarter and only one in the final 9:23. The tides turned incredibly in the second quarter, one that saw Whitman completely flip the scales – and then some. Whitman went on an 18-1 run highlighted by three pointers from Martin and Avery Neal. The three-point barrage continued as Lundberg and Martin both nailed triples inside of two minutes to play to help Whitman take a four-point lead into the break.
Whitman continued to lead in the third quarter and then began to pull away. Buckets from Morgan and Martin extended the lead to seven points before Lundberg scored at the hoop to increase the lead to nine points. In the final two minutes, Morgan scored on a layup then drained a three pointer to make a 51-39 score and the Blues never looked back.
Whitman will look to sweep the weekend when they tip off at Lewis & Clark on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.
