NEWBERG, Ore. – Carly Martin scored a game-high 24 points, Korin Baker added a double double with 23 points and 10 rebounds and the No. 7 Whitman College women’s basketball team staved off a late rally to take down George Fox in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.
Alexa Borter and Kylie Ritter led the Bruin effort. Both scored a team-high 13 points with Borter adding 11 rebounds and six assists.
The Blues led big at halftime and maintained that advantage through the third quarter, but had to hold off George Fox who whittled the lead from 17 points down to only three in the game’s final minutes. Martin’s layup with 3:34 to play was the final basket of the game for the Blues, but they won the free throw battle down the stretch to close out the win.
Whitman jumped on George Fox early, opening the game on a 10-2 run capped by a Holly Morgan jumper with 4:51 to play in the first quarter. Borter stemmed the tide for the Bruins with a pair baskets, then Claire Hinds scored on a fast break to whittle the deficit to one point by quarter’s end.
Borter scored to open the second quarter and gave George Fox the lead, but Baker got her jumper to go to grab the lead right back. The bucket kickstarted a 10-0 run for the Blues that helped extend the lead to 12 points at halftime.
Whitman will look to remain perfect in league play when they visit Whitworth on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
