WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Carly Martin led all scorers with 17 points, Korin Baker nearly posted a double double with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and the No. 7 Whitman College women’s basketball team remained perfect in league play with a 55-48 win at Pacific in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.
Martin did all her damage for the Blues (13-1, 5-0 NWC) inside the three-point line after shooting 7-19 from the floor. The Blues weren’t firing on all cylinders offensively but their defense was too much for Pacific to handle, turning the Boxers over twice as many times (20-11) leading to 17 points off turnovers.
Shaade Williams was the high scorer for the Boxers, posting 14 points while grabbing five rebounds.
The damage was done in the first half as the Blues carried a double digit lead into the break. Despite the deficit, the Boxers hung around for much of the first quarter, tying the score at 8-8 on a Jasmine Olivar jumper with just over four minutes to play. Whitman grabbed the momentum and ran off nine unanswered points and took a seven-point lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw the lead quickly balloon to double digits after Holly Morgan stuck back-to-back jumpers to open the period. Baskets by Martin and Baker, followed by a three pointer from Christiane Carlisle, extended the lead to 13 points with 2:44 to play. Martin later lifted the advantage to 15 with her layup and the Blues cruised into halftime with their large lead.
Whitman led by as many as 17 points in the second half before a too-little-too-late fourth quarter surge from the Boxers shaved the lead to single digits by game’s end.
The Blues close out the weekend with a trip to George Fox on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
