Team USA’s U-20 World Cup run has unfortunately ended after Wednesday’s 1-0 semifinal loss to tournament favorites North Korea (DPRK).
This result marks the U-20 USWNT’s best showing since their fourth-place finish in 2016, where they also fell to DPRK in the semifinals before DPRK went on to win the Cup.
North Korea outshot the US 18-7 in the game, with 17-year-old Choe Il-Son scoring the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute. Choe now leads the Golden Boot race with five goals in the tournament.
Japan tops the Netherlands in second semifinal
Despite a tough match, the US team gave DPRK a challenge, while Japan dominated against the Netherlands with a 2-0 win, outshooting them 24-1.
Both goals for Japan were scored by Manaka Matsukubo, who plays for the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL.
Where to watch the U-20 World Cup final and third-place match
The US will compete against the Netherlands for third place on Saturday, with live coverage on Fox Soccer Plus.
On Sunday, the final match will be a rematch of the U-20 Asian Cup final, where DPRK faced Japan and took the title from them for the first time since 2013. The final will be live on FS2.
If DPRK wins on Sunday, they will join the US and Germany as the only nations with three U-20 World Championships.
