NY Liberty Fight Back Against Post That Disrespected Entire WNBA originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The WNBA has been on the rise over the past several years, and it’s clear that interest has grown.

When Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark entered the league last season, viewership took another major leap, making it the most-watched regular season ever on ESPN platforms, up 155% from 2023. Attendance also increased by 48%, marking the highest average attendance since 1999.
With the league’s recent momentum, WNBA teams aren’t taking the disrespect anymore. On Saturday night, after the New York Knicks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, a post from a Boston-based account caught the attention of the New York Liberty.

The post trolled New York sports fans, saying the city’s last major championship came in 2011, while completely ignoring the Liberty’s WNBA title last season.

“New York hasn’t won a major sports championship since 2011,” the Boston account wrote.
The Liberty came across the post and weren’t going to overlook it without a response.
“🥱,” they wrote.
The 2011 title came from the NFL’s New York Giants, but it’s worth noting the Liberty aren’t the only pro team in the city to win since then. New York City FC won the MLS Cup in 2022.
The keyword in the post is “major.” It’s clear the Boston account doesn’t view a WNBA championship or an MLS Cup as counting toward that. Regardless, the WNBA will continue to grow no matter what the critics say, and that’s evident through the early part of this new season.
