A new beautiful, state-of-the-art sporting complex is scheduled to take over Greenpoint in 2027. Perhaps most exciting is the fact that the facility will be the home of our very own reigning WNBA champion team, the New York Liberty.
The $80 million project will span a grand total of 75,000 square feet on Newtown Creek, overlooking Manhattan’s skyline.
In case you missed the point: the training center “underscores the organization’s dedication to providing its world-class players with unparalleled year-round resources that produce championship results and sustained success, developing groundbreaking investments throughout Brooklyn, and enabling community opportunities,” as mentioned in an official press release.

The players themselves helped develop the plans for the new practice facility, which will boast two full courts with remote cameras and data tracking technology; an outdoor court; a roof deck player dining area with indoor and outdoor seating; a two-story strength training room; a full recovery suite boasting steam, sauna and massage rooms; two private family lounges (with nursery areas!); an in-house player hair, nail and makeup studio; a media room; and a broadcast and podcast studio.

Also on deck: a new locker room concept that will afford each player her own private suite “with a full height wardrobe and sneaker storage, a vanity with face-illuminating mirrors and lighting, and a seven-foot daybed for lounging and recovery.”
We wouldn’t be surprised to hear about the players wanting to permanently move into their new practice facility, to be honest.
Although details regarding community-wide reach are still scant, the neighborhood will likely benefit from the opening as well. In fact, the new destination seeks to expand the team’s impact around the borough and beyond through programming and more.

“The New York Liberty deserve a facility of their own: one that reflects their tremendous talent, work ethic and ambition,” said Clara Wu Tsai, Governor of the New York Liberty, in a statement. “This facility is a sign of our commitment to the team, to the city of New York, and to the advancement of women’s sports.”
While waiting for the official debut of the new space, we’ll be watching the ladies playing their very best during their regular season, which is set to tip-off at the Barclays Center against the Las Vegas Aces on May 17.
