About New York Junior Tennis & Learning: 

For over fifty years, New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) has honored its founder Arthur Ashe’s legacy by celebrating the diversity of children, encouraging them to reach their highest potential through free tennis and academic programs. NYJTL is the largest provider of youth tennis and education programs in the nation, providing services in 100 unique sites across all five boroughs while reaching nearly 90,000 kids. In addition, NYJTL designed, funded (with NYC), built and operates the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in the South Bronx. All NYJTL community tennis and after school programs are offered at no cost to its participants.

The mission of NYJTL is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. It believes life skills gained through tennis, academics, healthy living, and character development are a catalyst for long-term achievement.

Position Summary: 

NYJTL is seeking a dynamic Fitness Director to lead the successful day-to-day operations of the fitness program at the Cary Leeds Center. This role will also oversee and enhance the physical fitness and conditioning components within our High-Performance Junior Tennis Program, ensuring athletes achieve peak performance and long-term development. This position reports to the General Manager of the Cary Leeds Center.

Core Responsibilities:

Adheres to positive coaching philosophy motivating participants through encouragement and praise.

Models polite, courteous and respectful behavior while interacting with program participants and staff.

Lead in teaching and practice programs.

Develops personal training clientele 

Manage fitness space ensuring cleanliness and safety.

Maintain programmatic records including participation, performance.

Assess participant fitness skills. Make student referral to other NYJTL tennis and fitness programs as appropriate.

May supervise other coaches/trainers at site.

Ensure that instruction and games are safe, well organized and fun for program participants.

Attends required meetings and staff development workshops.

Assists in all activities needed for the orderly operation of the program: supervising children during snack/supper, facilitating dismissal, conducting field trips, hosting special events, etc.

Perform other duties and special project as requested by management.

Qualifications:

High school degree or equivalent.

3 or more years of fitness/personal training within a high-performance setting

Successful completion of pre-employment basic tennis skills assessment.

Previous fitness/tennis experience.

Completion of NYJTL or similar tennis coaching seminars.

Requires at least one-year previous experience working with children in similar setting.

Tennis background a PLUS

The above is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by this position. Other functions may be assigned, and management retains the right to add or change the duties at any time.

Job Type 

Full Time

Salary Range 

$30 – $60/HR, commensurate with experience
