RB team principal Laurent Mekies believes that Red Bull’s transparency regarding the review of driver performances could result in excessive pressure during a race weekend.
During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, there was intense speculation surrounding Daniel Ricciardo’s future, with his demeanor shifting from anticipation of a decision for 2025 to the belief that he had likely competed in his final Formula 1 race by Sunday night. The heightened scrutiny was partially fueled by Red Bull’s confirmation of evaluating its drivers’ performances across both teams after Singapore – a practice also done earlier in the year. Mekies acknowledges the potential drawbacks of this approach.
“There is nothing wrong with periodically reviewing your drivers’ performance, but I think we may have been too public about it,” Mekies shared with SiriusXM. “We conducted reviews in the first part of the season, notably just before the summer break, and indications were given that we would reassess after Singapore as well.

“It’s all part of the game. At times, it may seem like the pressure is escalating, especially for Daniel in this instance.
“My primary concern is for Daniel, considering the significant pressure he has faced this season. Some races were quieter, while others were challenging – and this was undoubtedly one of the tough ones. These athletes are at a high level and know how to manage it, but occasionally, it can be unnecessary.
Speaking before Ricciardo secured the fastest lap and finished 18th in Singapore, Mekies emphasized how the focus could divert attention towards a driver and potentially impact results, particularly in the competitive midfield where margins are slim.
“Despite our efforts to minimize distractions, it inevitably drains some energy. With such tight competition and Daniel’s impressive performance throughout the weekend, facing setbacks in qualifying can be crucial in such a fine-margin environment. We must recognize the challenging circumstances he encountered at this event.”
