The Rangers’ playoff hopes have been dashed with an 11-14 showing in August. As they evaluate their plans for 2025, Jack Leiter, the former #2 overall pick, will be given a regular spot in the rotation for the rest of the year, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Leiter had his first three big league starts between April and May, then was sent down to Triple-A Round Rock. This week, he returned to play as the 27th man for a doubleheader against the White Sox, pitching four innings and allowing three runs.
After the game, Leiter was sent back to Round Rock, but can be recalled at any time without waiting the usual 15 days after being optioned. Texas plans to keep him in the rotation, with his next turn coming early next week, coinciding with the September roster expansion.
Although Leiter has faced challenges in his professional career, he has shown promise with his strikeout ability and a lower walk rate this year in Round Rock. The Rangers are giving him a chance against MLB hitters to see if he can find his form.
Looking ahead to their rotation for next season, the Rangers face potential free agent departures and injury concerns. They are expected to make outside acquisitions to supplement their veteran group and will rely on younger pitchers like Leiter to step up.
While Leiter’s future role in the bullpen is a possibility, the Rangers are focused on giving him a shot as a starter next month. A strong showing could earn him a chance to compete for a rotation spot in Spring Training.
Kumar Rocker, Leiter’s college teammate, has been impressive in his return from Tommy John surgery and could also factor into the Rangers’ pitching plans in the future.
