Kansas City’s groundbreaking CPKC Stadium has been selected as the host for the 2024 NWSL Championship, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning.
The stadium, which opened earlier this year, is the first venue constructed specifically for an NWSL team. Throughout this season, the undefeated Current have consistently sold out the 11,500-seat capacity stadium for every home game.
This will be the first time that Kansas City hosts the NWSL Championship, and with the Current leading the league standings, they could potentially play in the final match in November. The Current are one of only two teams that have not lost a game this season.
The 2024 Championship is scheduled for November 23rd, making it the latest final in NWSL history.
“CPKC Stadium represents the rapid growth and investment seen in the NWSL, women’s soccer, and women’s sports globally,” stated NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman in a press release.
“Choosing a venue that showcases the impact of infrastructure, investment, and community support on the sport’s development and success was a natural decision for hosting the league’s premier event.”
Given the team’s impressive home game attendance record, it is highly likely that this year’s Championship game will sell out. Last year’s final, held at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, set a Championship attendance record with 25,011 fans.
“The NWSL Championship is a top-tier global sporting event,” commented Current co-founder and owner Chris Long. “We are incredibly excited that Kansas City and CPKC Stadium were selected to host this prestigious event.”
