Osaka’s jellyfish dress and iconic accessories steal the show in Aussie Open win

Naomi Osaka’s first appearance at the 2026 Australian Open was a true fashion spectacle, as the Japanese star debuted her ocean-inspired Nike dress and elevated the look even further with extraordinary accessories — a white hat embellished with a butterfly and a floor-length veil, along with a white asymmetrical umbrella that also featured a butterfly detail.

The four-time Grand Slam champion battled past Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic 6-3 3-6 6-4 after a tense two hours and 24 minutes. After taking the opening set, Osaka found herself 3–0 down in the second and Ruzic progressed to level the match. In the deciding set, Osaka surged to a 2-0 lead but soon dropped serve. Although she clawed one break back, the 16th seed again found herself trailing 4–3. The Japanese star responded emphatically, however, winning the final three games in a row to seal her place in the second round, where she will face Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea.

Although the match itself was entertaining, Osaka’s fashion moment undeniably stole the show in Melbourne. The centerpiece of her look was the Nike Spring Naomi Dress. Notably, it’s available for purchase, unlike many of her previous custom designs.

The lightweight, bluish dress with lime tie-dye accents is inspired by the ocean, while the rippled overlays on the left side and the decorative ruffled mesh trim cascading past the hemline evoke the movement of jellyfish. The design bears some resemblance to Maria Sharapova’s hate-it-or-love-it “seaweed” Nike dress from the 2010 Australian Open.

As always, the dress was just one element of Osaka’s carefully curated Grand Slam fashion statement. For her entrance onto the court against Ruzic, she wore an elegant white hat adorned with a large butterfly and a dramatic veil that extended all the way to the floor. The butterfly served as a tribute to the one that famously landed on her face during the 2021 Australian Open, when she won the title for the second time. That same motif also appeared on the asymmetrical white umbrella she carried, reminiscent of the parasols traditionally used by Japanese women for sun protection.

Beneath her tennis dress, Osaka wore long white pleated layers: dramatic flared pants and a skirt. For warm-up, the 28-year-old completed the ensemble with a jacket perfectly matching the dress, while her shoes echoed the same blue-and-green colorway.
