COLUMBUS, Ohio – After two tough contests at home to start the 2024-2025 season, the Kenyon College women’s basketball team made the short trip to Columbus on Saturday night to take on Capital University for the team’s first road game of the season.
Led by three first years on the stat sheet and a new career high for Alyssa Horsley, the Owls improved on their shot making and scoring in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Comets, falling 34-68.
Capital (2-0) came out of the gates hot, firing off a 10-3 run to start the contest on 50 percent shooting and 33 percent from beyond the arc. Kiana Mollabashy added her team-high fourth triple to start off the game, but Kenyon’s offense was slow to start, as Anissa Hardy and Horsley were the only others to find the net in the first as the visitors trailed 17-7.
Kenyon’s (0-3) offensive woes continued in the second, but Horsley’s hot hand kept the Owls within reach, as the first year added five points in the quarter off of a nice three pointer and two made free throws. The team’s second leading scorer, first-year Katherine Organ, also drilled a three in the second, but Kenyon fell behind 38-15 at the half.
The Owls’ offense improved after halftime, registering a 25 percent field goal mark in the third and adding two trios at a 50 percent clip, both figures much higher than the first 20 minutes. Horsley again led the scoring with a nice triple followed up by another from Grace Murphy.
The fourth was Kenyon’s best from a scoring standpoint, firing off its highest total of the evening, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the 24-52 deficit created by Capital. Eva Winston, another first-year, led the charge in the final 10 minutes with five points, going 75 percent from the charity stripe. In the end, the Comets took the game 68-34.
Horsley led the team with 12 points shooting 42.9 percent from the field, 40 percent from three, and 80 percent from the free throw line. With the new career high, she moves up to the team’s leading scorer. Organ and Winston followed next, each chipping in five points, while Organ led the group with six boards.
Kenyon’s record drops to 0-3 on the season. The Owls will travel to Sharon, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 19 to take on Penn State Shenango at 7:00 pm.
