Owls drop conference contest to Tigers

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The DePauw University Tigers controlled the glass, played take-away defense, and handed the Kenyon College women’s basketball team a 67-47 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) loss on Saturday afternoon at Neal Fieldhouse.

The Tigers outrebounded the Owls 36-23, which included a massive 14-1 difference on the offensive boards. DePauw senior Riley Mont led the way, snaring a game-high 10 rebounds with three of her teammates each accounting for four more rebounds. Kenyon’s rebounding leader was sophomore guard Susannah Zimmerman, who had five.Zimmerman also scored seven points for Kenyon, which posted its best team shooting percentage in two months. The Owls shot at a rate of 42.2 percent (19-of-45) including 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from three-point land. First-year forward Antonia Marzini tied Zimmerman’s seven points, while first-year guard Abby Burdette led Kenyon with eight points.Although the Owls were shooting the ball well, they continued to struggle with maintaining possession. DePauw racked up 19 steals and forced Kenyon into 27 turnovers, which the Tigers flipped into 33 points.The Tigers also benefited from 19 Kenyon personal fouls, going 14-of-19 at the free throw line. Comparatively, Kenyon was awarded, and made, just two free throws throughout the game.Early on, the Tigers jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 14-5. Kenyon got off to a rough start, missing four of its first five shots and turning the ball over five times in the first seven minutes of play.DePauw closed out the first quarter with a 18-10 lead, increased its lead to as many as 15 points in the second quarter and then got to halftime with a 32-20 advantage.Kenyon came out of the locker room on a tear, putting together an 8-2 third-quarter run that cut the DePauw lead down to six points. During the outburst, Burdette and Kiana Mollabashy drained three-pointers for the Owls.The momentum did not stay with Kenyon very long, though. DePauw responded with 12 straight points, half of them at the free throw line, and wound up taking a 50-30 lead in the final quarter of play.Kenyon, which fell to 5-11 overall and 0-5 in NCAC play, got behind by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter and never got closer than 14.DePauw, winners of three straight, improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC.
