South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley observed a lot of WNBA action over the weekend, with several Gamecock alums making impressive showings.
A’ja Wilson had two outstanding games for the Las Vegas Aces, showcasing her dominance on the court. She scored 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a Sunday win against the Los Angeles Sparks, along with 5 steals, 2 blocks, and shooting over 50%. In another game on Saturday, she had 24 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks, and again shot over 50% against the New York Liberty, extending her WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles to eight games.
Two other Gamecock players set career-high stats during the weekend.
Aliyah Boston had impressive performances in two games against the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm. She recorded 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists on Friday against the Mercury, and on Sunday had 9 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 assists. Her all-around contributions helped the Indiana Fever secure back-to-back wins post-Olympics.
Kamilla Cardoso stood out for her performance on Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for her 4th double-double of the season. Her 14 rebounds set a new career high, while her 15 points and 3 assists were near her best marks.
Wilson is a strong contender for the WNBA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards, Boston could make the All-WNBA team, and Cardoso is in the running for WNBA All-Rookie recognition.
