The Paris Diamond League event brought some surprises
Upon reflecting on the overall standards of the athletes at the 2024 Meeting de Paris, it was hard not to be disappointed. With the Olympics approaching, many athletes prioritized training over competing, affecting the depth of the field. The US Olympic Track and Field team members were notably absent. Additionally, with major events like the Olympics, World Indoors, and European Championships in the same year, accommodating 15 Diamond League events posed a challenge. The scheduling conflict with Hengelo further complicated matters.
Despite the initial disappointment, the event showcased two world records and several outstanding performances that changed perceptions. Alison Dos Santos set the tone by winning the 400m hurdles in a relaxed 47.78 seconds, positioning himself as a strong contender against Karsten Warholm.
Djamel Sedjati clinched the 800m victory with an Algerian national record, while Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Gabriel Tual set personal and national records respectively, all finishing in under 1:42.
Mondo Duplantis continued his dominance by claiming victory in the pole vault with a six-meter leap.
Abraham Sime triumphed in the steeplechase in 8:02.56, resulting in five personal records and three national records in the top six finishers.
Valarie Allman secured the discus title with a throw of 68.07, and Larissa Iapuchino won the long jump with a distance of 6.82. However, disappointing performances from Malaika Mihambo and Ivana Spanovic raised concerns with the Olympics approaching.
Noteworthy mentions include the High Jump and 1500m world records set during the event, adding to the excitement of the meet.
