INDIANAPOLIS – Butler women’s basketball head coach Austin Parkinson introduced Nevena Markovic as the newest assistant coach for the Bulldog program. Markovic joins the team after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach and international recruiting coordinator at Vermont.
“We are excited to welcome Nev to our coaching staff and program,” Parkinson said. “Having Nev on board is like bringing a family member home, considering she was my first-ever signee as a head coach years ago. Her professional playing experience and coaching success at Vermont make her a valuable addition to our team. I have always admired her passion for the game, work ethic, and basketball IQ. She will greatly contribute to working with our post players and enhancing our international recruiting efforts.”
Markovic was the first recruit Parkinson signed when he took over the IU Indy (IUPUI) program. She was named Summit League Freshman of the Year in 2012 and also earned Second Team All-Conference honors during her time as a Jaguar. Markovic served as team captain at IUPUI before embarking on a seven-year professional playing career that ultimately led her to coaching.
“I am grateful to Coach P for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Butler family, and I am eager to contribute to the program in any way I can,” Markovic said. “It is a special moment for me to have played for him and now work alongside him. Butler is an exciting place to be right now, with big things on the horizon for the program.”
During her time at Vermont, Markovic played a key role in the team’s success, including winning the America East Regular Season Championship and Tournament Championship, leading to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009-10. The Catamounts enjoyed a 17-game winning streak and reached the WNIT Fab 4 during her tenure.
Before Vermont, Markovic worked as an assistant coach at St. Francis, a skills coach in Illinois, and a program coordinator and assistant coach for youth teams. Her international playing career included stints in Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and France, earning championships and accolades along the way.
Markovic, a graduate of IUPUI with a degree in Sports Management and Business, brings a wealth of experience and success to the Butler women’s basketball program.
