PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury host the Las Vegas Aces on Friday night, with the team beginning to keep an eye on the standings in this last stretch.

The teams are separated by one game, with Phoenix fourth in the WNBA standings and Las Vegas in fifth. As the regular season is almost over, the playoff push has heated up and every game counts. Back in July, Mercury head coach said the team wasn’t worried about the standings.

“They’re not worried, they’re probably more disappointed that they feel people overlook them,” said Tibbetts on July 9, according to the team’s post-game notes. “They’re not trying to get their shine or anything like that. We just like to compete.”

With only 13 games left, Phoenix is starting to pay more attention to the standings.

“We’ve definitely been talking about it,” guard Kahleah Copper said after practice on Thursday, according to Desert Wave Media’s David Veenstra. “And trying to put the emphasis on what’s important. I’ll check it, just after games and after everyone has played to see where we fall, who were close to [and] who we need to get away from.”

The Mercury look for a bounce back after their loss to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday and hope to go 3-1 in this home stand.

The Aces are on a five-game win streak, with their last win on Wednesday after defeating the reigning WNBA Champions, the New York Liberty.
