The 2024 WNBA season concluded with the New York Liberty winning the championship trophy in a thrilling Game 5 of the Finals. This season made history with record-breaking attendance, viewership, and engagement. The New York Liberty secured their first title amid this success. In the midst of this, WNBA legend Diana Taurasi has provided an update on her future in the league.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Taurasi discussed her potential retirement, saying, “I don’t take retirement lightly. I know that once I make the decision, I will stick to it.” She mentioned that she plans to consult with her wife, Penny Taylor, and the Phoenix Mercury before finalizing her choice.
“I have been contemplating retirement every day. It’s a big decision, and I want to make sure I choose the right path. Sometimes, after a season ends, thinking about the next one is the last thing on your mind,” the 42-year-old Taurasi explained.
Her Record-Breaking Achievement
Taurasi’s season ended when the Mercury were eliminated by the Minnesota Lynx in the playoffs. Despite this, she made history by becoming the oldest player in WNBA and NBA history to score over 20 points in a playoff game. This milestone adds to her illustrious career, which began when she was drafted first overall by the Mercury in 2004 and won the Rookie of the Year award. Taurasi led the Mercury to three championships (2007, 2009, 2014) and holds the title of the league’s all-time leading scorer.
Taurasi has mentioned her disinterest in a ‘farewell tour’ and prefers to make a definitive announcement when she decides to retire. However, she is open to continuing her involvement in basketball in a different capacity.
She finds inspiration in Mercury and Suns owner Mat Ishbia and is intrigued by the idea of becoming a team owner in the future. “I would love to have a role where I can influence a team. The work he has done with the team is a great example for female athletes,” she expressed.
