Piero Ferrari explains the reasons for Ferrari’s 17-year wait for a world title

The last Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship won by Ferrari dates back to the 2008 season. What is really missing for the Scuderia Ferrari to return to the very top of world motorsport? This is the opinion of Piero Ferrari.

At present, the Scuderia Ferrari team finds itself in second position in the Constructors’ Championship standings, but with an enormous gap of almost 300 points from McLaren, who are the undisputed leaders of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Unlike last year, during which Ferrari at least seemed able to compete for the title until the later stages of the championship, in the first 14 races of this campaign the Maranello team has never looked like a genuine contender. The last Formula 1 world title won by Ferrari still remains the 2008 Constructors’ Championship.

Piero Ferrari, the son of the legendary founder Enzo Ferrari, gave an extensive interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he touched upon many topics, ranging from the present situation to the glorious past of the Italian team. In the course of the interview, he also tried to outline the reasons why the team has not yet managed to return to a position of dominance in Formula 1.

Between budget caps and new competitive cyclesOver the years, Formula 1 has undergone many profound changes, and Ferrari itself has had to adapt to them. Yet, according to Piero Ferrari, one thing has always remained unchanged: the spirit of the Scuderia Ferrari. During the interview he stated: “The spirit is the same, you just need to look at the employees: there is an incredibly strong sense of belonging. In Maranello you see them even after work hours still wearing their uniforms, because being part of Ferrari, for those who work there, represents a true value.”

This sense of belonging, the dedication to the cause, and the constant desire to improve day by day are certainly not lacking within Ferrari. So what has been missing in recent years? The Maranello team has now been chasing the dream of winning another Constructors’ Championship for 17 long seasons. For Piero Ferrari, the explanation lies in the cyclical nature of Formula 1: “I think it is a matter of cycles. Formula 1 has always worked this way, and when you enter a negative cycle you never know when you will hit rock bottom.” Ferrari added: “Today it is even more complicated because you cannot spend more money to close the gaps, given that there are strict limitations imposed by the budget cap. What is needed is to bring together a series of winning factors in order to change direction.”
