New Sauber Motorsport boss Mattia Binotto reveals that there are several drivers being considered for a 2025 seat with Stake, including Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire, who has impressed in IndyCar, and McLaren’s F2 rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.
Binotto, who recently took on the roles of COO and CTO at Sauber, will be joined by Red Bull’s current sporting director Jonathan Wheatley as team principal next year. With Mercedes and Alpine already confirming their drivers for 2025, Stake has one remaining seat outside of the Red Bull program, with Bortoleto being a strong contender after his successful rookie season in F2.
Speaking about the potential candidates, Binotto said, “Theo is already part of our reserve driver lineup, so he is definitely on our radar. Gabriel is showing great promise in F2, and we are closely monitoring his progress, along with many others. We are considering various factors to make the best decision for the team.”

Despite Bortoleto’s impressive performance in the feature race at Monza, Binotto emphasized that the team is still evaluating whether to prioritize a rookie or an experienced driver for the upcoming season.
Binotto mentioned, “We are considering our options carefully, looking at the long-term goals of the team. The decision will be based on a combination of factors, including experience and potential. We aim to make a decision soon to prepare the team for the future.”
He added, “It’s important for us to make the right choice and avoid any speculation. We are in the process of evaluating all the possibilities and weighing the pros and cons. Hopefully, we will reach a decision soon.”
