COLUMBIA — An instrumental part of South Carolina women’s basketball’s offense is no longer with the team.
The Gamecocks relied heavily on former center Kamilla Cardoso, who played a key role in their undefeated championship season. With Cardoso now in the WNBA, the team must adjust and make changes to their offense.
Despite Cardoso missing five games last season, the Gamecocks were still able to win, showcasing the depth and talent of players like Ashlyn Watkins, who stepped in to fill the void left by Cardoso.
Here are some potential lineup rotations for the upcoming 2024-25 season to help mitigate the absence of Cardoso:
South Carolina starters Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins
It is likely that coach Dawn Staley will stick with the same lineup as last season, featuring Chloe Kitts and Watkins in the frontcourt.
Watkins and Kitts have shown good chemistry on the court, excelling in both defense and offense. The team may shift towards a more perimeter-focused offense with shooters like Te-Hina Paopao, Bree Hall, Tessa Johnson, and MiLaysia Fulwiley.
Sania Feagin and Maryam Dauda
Feagin’s experience coming off the bench could complement the addition of Maryam Dauda, a transfer from Arkansas. Staley may opt for a larger lineup with Dauda and Feagin alongside Kitts and Watkins.
Dauda’s versatility and skill set could bring a different dynamic to the team, especially if she decides to play a more guard-like role.
Sakima Walker, Adhel Tac: centers for South Carolina
Sakima Walker could potentially fill the void left by Cardoso as the team’s center. While her minutes were limited last season, her height and talent make her a viable option for Staley to consider.
Redshirt freshman Adhel Tac, recovering from a knee injury, may also provide depth at the center position and contribute to the team’s success.
