World No.35 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan shocked Wimbledon with a 3-6 6-1 6-2 upset over top seed Iga Swiatek, marking her first victory against the Pole in five career meetings and ending Swiatek’s 21-match winning streak.
Competing in the third round of Wimbledon for the first time after five second-round exits, Putintseva pulled off a major upset. The Birmingham champion bounced back from losing the first set to completely dismantle Swiatek’s game, showcasing a performance as dominant as a category 4 hurricane.
In a 36-minute second set, Putintseva claimed her first set ever against Swiatek by serving her a breadstick. Riding on her newfound momentum, she started the third set with a love break and kept her dominance, securing a double break for a 4-0 advantage. Serving for the win at 5-2, Putintseva converted her third match point, ousting the five-time Grand Slam champion with a commanding display.
In the fourth round, Putintseva will face 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko. Their head-to-head record stands at 2-2, but this will mark their first encounter on grass.
