January can be a challenging month for many, especially for those of us living in regions with gloomy and dreary weather. The festive season has come to an end, it’s back to routine with school and work, and you may find your mental health taking a hit.
Hannah Beecham is the creator of RED January, which is marking its 10th anniversary this year. A decade ago this month, Hannah noticed that her mother was struggling with depression. Her mother was spending a lot of time in bed, but Hannah knew that staying active could help combat depression. She started taking her mom for a daily walk, and by the end of the month, her mother’s spirits had lifted, giving birth to RED January.
RED stands for Rise Every Day, emphasizing the importance of getting up and moving our bodies daily. Any form of movement is beneficial for our mental and physical well-being. “I even heard of someone doing squats while brushing their teeth!” Hannah shares.
