Relic Entertainment’s Philippe Boulle won’t confirm nor

We’re celebrating the announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition, but that hasn’t shifted attention away from a lingering question: Is Dawn of War 4 happening at some point? One would think the reactivation of the collaboration between Relic Entertainment and Games Workshop would help, but nothing’s certain… yet.

While speaking to veteran Dawn of War design director Philippe Boulle about this Definitive Edition and his long history with the property, we couldn’t resist asking about taking the collaboration with GW a step further. Of course, he didn’t confirm nor deny talks about a potential Dawn of War 4, but he seems hopeful about Relic’s relationship with the owners of the IP after so many successful projects and this surprise re-release of the RTS classic. Here’s what he had to say:

“I can only talk about things that we’ve announced, but we have a long relationship with Games Workshop. I came to Relic to work on GW games. I worked on Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Dawn of War 2, Dawn of War 3, Space Marine. You know, it’s my happy place. And, you know, I still paint the miniatures and so on, so yeah, but I’m completely focused right now on the Definitive Edition.”

There’s no tease to be found here, but Boulle seemed quite happy with the studio’s return to Dawn of War, which he also said was something Games Workshop had been thinking about for a while, so fingers crossed.

As an extra tidbit before we publish our full interview with him next week, we can confirm online servers will use Relic’s own platform. Boulle elaborated on the information teased in the press release:

“It will use the RelicLink backend, which is what drives the MP matchmaking for all the other Dawn of War games, the Company of Heroes games, as well as the Age of Empires games, so that’s a quite robust system. The classic game was already converted to that when it was added to Steam, but now we’ll be able to integrate more closely. We want to get friend invites working, to make it easier to join matches, and so on… It’s fundamentally a peer-to-peer system, but a battle server checks to ensure everybody’s in sync.”
