TEMPE, AZ – John Peterson’s journey to coaching was truly unique, resulting in remarkable success. Over his 24 years as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at Tyler Junior College, Peterson secured an impressive total of 23 national championships (11 for men, 12 for women) and achieved a career record of 828-189 (.814). Additionally, Peterson held the position of Athletic Director at Tyler Junior College from 1995-2000 and was a Junior College representative on the ITA Board.
Prior to leading the tennis programs at Tyler, Peterson had experience teaching physical education, coaching football, track, and eventually tennis at the middle and high school levels. He notably clinched five state championships during his eight-year tenure. Peterson’s interest in tennis was sparked by a chance encounter with a track athlete’s inquiry about his tennis skills, leading him to purchase an $11 racquet and embark on a passionate tennis journey.
Despite initial hesitation, Peterson accepted Tyler Junior College’s offer and dedicated himself to filling “really big shoes.” Through fostering a culture of camaraderie and resilience, Peterson excelled in his role at Tyler, earning numerous awards and accolades along the way, including induction into the NJCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame and the Texas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007.
Today, Peterson remains active in the tennis community, supporting Junior College teams and acknowledging the impact of his family on his success and motivation. His induction into the ITA Men’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame further solidifies his legacy in the sport.
The ceremony honoring Peterson and three other inductees is set to take place in Williamsburg, Virginia at The College of William & Mary on Saturday, October 5th at 5:30 pm. Click the link below to RSVP.
