The Los Angeles Dodgers may consider taking a risk by pursuing right-hander Shane Bieber in free agency.
While there is some uncertainty in acquiring Bieber due to his season-ending elbow injury, the Dodgers could benefit from adding a top-tier arm like his to their pitching rotation.
Bieber, a potential front-of-the-rotation asset when healthy, is believed to be a target for the Dodgers in free agency, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic. The Texas Rangers are also reportedly interested, setting the stage for a competitive bidding war.
In 2024, Bieber has missed significant playing time for the Cleveland Guardians for the second consecutive season due to elbow issues.
The recent injury setback was particularly devastating for fans as Bieber was performing at a level reminiscent of his Cy Young-winning season in 2020. He underwent Tommy John surgery in April.
Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations for the Guardians, expressed sympathy for Bieber’s absence from the rotation.
Manager Stephen Vogt praised Bieber’s perseverance despite the UCL injury diagnosis.
Despite the challenges he currently faces, Bieber remains a sought-after free agent, ranked as The Athletic’s No.12 potential free agent.
It is unlikely that Bieber will return to the field until next summer. He may consider signing a shorter, reduced-rate contract while he continues his recovery.
