LOS ANGELES — Now that basketball season is over in New York and the sun may soon be out to signal summer’s start, we can finally, fully start to appreciate the remarkable, ageless and selfless Aaron Judge, who may be having the greatest baseball season ever.
While Saturday represented a major downer as the final score read Dodgers 18, Judge 2 (two homers), Judge is on pace for the best statistical year unaided (read as no PEDs) since Babe Ruth posted a 255 OPS-plus in 1920, two points higher than Judge’s 253 mark into Sunday. That 253 is also the best ever mark in the integrated era, which is in its 79th season.
When it was pointed out to him that his year ranked with the best seasons of Ruth and Mickey Mantle, Judge, characteristically, praised the past pinstriped greats. But he demurred at the comparisons for a few reasons, mostly because he’s uber focused on the team, but also because there’s unfinished business, obviously true since he’s on the upswing, even two months past his 33rd birthday.
“My career’s not over yet. I’m still in the middle of it, and hopefully I can do special things down the road,” Judge told The Post in an exclusive interview.
