Kennedy was seen leaving the clubhouse in street clothes, indicating the Dodgers would be making a roster move.
Hernandez has been sidelined by an elbow injury since early July. There was initial concern the fan favorite would be able to return this season, but Hernandez miraculously began trending upwards.
While Hernandez has had a down year — hitting .195 with eight home runs, 22 runs batted in, and an OPS of .626 — the Dodgers are desperate for his positional versatility.
Manager Dave Roberts revealed the plan is for Hernandez to be in the Dodgers lineup each the next two nights, so the remaining two games against the Cincinnati Reds.
“I’m not exactly sure where he’s gonna start, but tonight he’ll be available off the bench,” Roberts said Monday. “The next two nights, he’ll get two starts.”
The Dodgers had several position players on the IL, including Hernandez, Max Muncy, Hyeseong Kim, and Tommy Edman. LA claimed Kennedy off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in lieu of all the injuries to position players this summer.
Kennedy appeared in seven games for the Dodgers, going 1-for-17 at the plate. While the infielder didn’t thrive in the batters box, Kennedy made some key defensive plays at third base for LA during his short stint with the organization.
