The Los Angeles Dodgers have an unfortunate amount of pitching injuries at this point in the season.

With already 14 arms on the injured list, including Cy Young award winners and All-Stars, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke on the extent to which he is working to find solutions.

“I mean, everything from my brain is about what we can do, like, how we can solve this,” Friedman said. “It’s like a game of Whack-a-Mole, and things keep popping up.”

The constant injuries aren’t new to the team, unfortunately. On the road to the 2024 World Series, the Dodgers were met with the same kind of ailments to pitchers, and tried to address this in the offseason by adding pitching depth.

Friedman explained that this work is now rendered useless.

“The definition of enough depth, I think is a fool’s errand. I don’t know what enough depth means. I think more is always better with pitching depth.”

L.A. went out and got ‘more’ this offseason, but it hasn’t exactly panned out at this point in the year. Three starters are on the injured list, and two of them were brought in this offseason.

Friedman concluded by talking about not pretending to know more about these complex injuries than the next person, but the willingness to admit when he and his team make mistakes in order to attempt stopping the cycle of hampered pitchers.

“But I said this a lot, and I think anyone who doesn’t say it is not being honest, there’s a lot we don’t know about injury stuff, and I think it’s important not to pretend like we have all the answers. There’s a lot to it that is really challenging, and we’re hoping to continue to grow and learn from experiences and just try to make the smartest, best move we can, knowing we’re going to make mistakes.”

Friedman may not have the answers, but the lack of solutions surely won’t keep him from trying to get the most effective product on the field at all times.

“It’s by far the No. 1 thing that keeps me up at night,” Friedman said.
