Tommy Edman exited the Los Angeles Dodgers’ series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning after sustaining an ankle injury while running to first base.
Edman had been playing through a lingering ankle injury since May, and unfortunately tweaked it again against the Rays.

The Dodgers were considering placing Edman and utility man Hyeseong Kim on the injured list at the end of July. Los Angeles called up Alex Freeland as a backup option and ultimately decided to only place Kim on the IL.
After exiting the game early on Sunday, Edman was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. There is no exact timeline for his return, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expects him to be out until September, per Dodgers Insider.
“It’s probably going to be some time in September,” Roberts said.
The Dodgers want to make sure Edman does not encounter any more ankle pain when he returns. The NL Gold Glove winner played an integral role in the team’s World Series championship last season after joining the team at the trade deadline.

Los Angeles acquired Edman and reliever Michael Kopech in a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox in 2024. Edman went on to win the NL Championship Series Most Valuable Player award.
Edman has continued to be a key player for the Dodgers this season and has taken on several roles around the field. He has primarily been their second baseman but has made appearances in center field and filled in at third base while Max Muncy recovered from a bone bruise.
At the plate, Edman is slashing .228/.281/.396 and has hit 12 home runs in 86 games.
The Dodgers expect Edman to be healthy before the end of the season but are taking extra precautions to make sure he will be fully healthy in October, and won’t suffer another setback before the postseason.
