Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman is no stranger to dominating in the ninth inning.
He was one of the best closers in the game between 2012 and 2021, making seven All-Star appearances and notching at least 30 saves in eight of those 10 years. Chapman posted a 2.25 ERA and a 1.023 WHiP over 540.1 innings during that time, recording 305 saves with 912 strikeouts.Â
While Chapman earned the occasional save, he settled in as a solid setup man from 2022 through 2024. He won a World Series ring in 2023 with the Rangers but had bounced through four different organizations before signing a one-year, $10.75 million contract with the Red Sox.
Although Chapman was expected to serve as a setup man in Boston, he was moved into the closer role due to injuries in the bullpen. Chapman has responded with what could be the best season of his career, posting a stellar 1.08 ERA and a 0.700 WHiP over his 50 innings, striking out 71 batters with just 14 walks while notching 24 saves.
The 37-year-old has gotten better throughout the season. Chapman has allowed just two runs, one earned, on six hits and six walks over his last 27 innings spanning 30 appearances, striking out 40 batters. He has not allowed a run since July 23, helping propel the Red Sox to a 71-59 record and the first wild-card spot.
Likewise, Chapman is not showing any signs of slowing down. His fastball and sinker still average 98.6 mph and 99.7 mph, respectively, routinely hitting triple digits. As the Red Sox continue their postseason push, Chapman has turned back the clock to his dominant peak, showing he has plenty left in the tank for October and beyond.
