Reports indicate that Robeisy Ramirez suffered a bilateral fracture in his right orbital bone during his rematch with Rafael Espinoza last night, as Salvador Rodriguez reports.
Ramirez (14-3, 9 KO) withdrew from the fight early in round six, losing to Espinoza (26-0, 22 KO) for the second time and failing to reclaim the WBO featherweight title.
After the fight, Ramirez told ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna that Espinoza had injured him with elbows and he felt that referee Chris Flores was not adequately protecting him from fouls, leading him to make the decision to withdraw from the fight.
While an orbital injury is a serious concern for a boxer, it is not necessarily career-ending. Ramirez, aged 30, hopes to continue his career for many more years, and despite any opinions from fans or TV analysts, he made the decision for himself, acknowledging his serious injury that could not be improved by continuing the fight.
Moving forward, Espinoza will defend his title in 2025, while Ramirez will have options for his return.
