According to recent NBA rumors, Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green may delay signing his contract extension until after the 2024-25 season.
At the Jalen Green Youth Basketball Camp in Houston, Green informed Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle that he is focused on the upcoming season rather than his contract.
“Definitely,” Green stated regarding his preference to reach a long-term agreement with the Rockets. “My primary focus is the upcoming season with the players we have.”

“[Our goal is] to make it to the playoffs and go as far as possible. We’re building team camaraderie, defining who we are. That’s the main focus right now, and everything will fall into place.”
Both Green and teammate Alperen Sengun, who are 22 years old, became eligible for extensions this summer.
However, neither has reached an agreement on a new contract that could potentially be valued at up to $224 million over five seasons. The deadline for extensions on rookie-scale contracts for 2021 draft class players is October 21.
According to Spotrac, Green is entering the final year of the four-year, $40.8 million deal he signed with Houston in August 2021. His $12.48 million team option was exercised last October.
NBA Rumors: Houston Rockets could match any offer sheet with qualifying offers for Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun
If neither Green nor Sengun sign contract extensions, they will become restricted free agents after the 2024-25 season. The Rockets would have the ability to match any offer sheet with qualifying offers.
Green expressed his excitement about the upcoming season, as per Feigen.
“We were simply out there playing, building that team chemistry,” Green remarked. “That’s the most important thing right now, striving to improve collectively as a team. We ended last season on a high note.”
“We’re all in sync, understanding what it takes to win. We know what we can achieve if we play with intensity. I believe we understand what needs to be done from the start to the end of this season, so hopefully, that propels us into the playoffs.”
In the 2023-24 season, Green averaged 19.6 points, a career-best 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 31.7 minutes per game while shooting 42.3% from the field, 33.2% from three-point range, and a career-high 80.4% from the free-throw line.
During the previous season, the Rockets went 27-35 in 62 games before winning 11 consecutive matches. Houston concluded the 2023-24 campaign with a 41-41 record, a significant improvement from the prior season.
Despite this, the Rockets finished in 12th place in the Western Conference standings, trailing the Golden State Warriors by five games for the final play-in spot. Houston is striving to progress further this season.
