What had been promoted as a bold, boundary-pushing tennis spectacle ultimately unfolded more like a polished exhibition than the high-voltage showdown it was billed to be. Afterward, she praised the overall quality of play and framed the match as a learning experience.
“I think I put up a great fight,” the WTA player said, noting that a future rematch would allow her to approach things differently now that she understands Kyrgios’ patterns and tendencies. “He was struggling, he got really tired.”
“Honestly, it was a really tough match, she is a hell of a player and such a great champion,” Kyrgios said after the match.
Overall, the exhibition was entertaining but bore little resemblance to the original 1973 Battle of the Sexes. Some fans even criticized it for diluting the legacy of that landmark event and potentially undermining women’s tennis. What is certain, it lacked both the political and cultural stakes of the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs battle.
