Sabrina Ionescu makes huge announcement on leaving Liberty, WNBA future plans

No need to fear: Sabrina Ionescu isn’t going anywhere.

She’s been asked this week about the possibility of leaving the New York Liberty to go home. The star from the Bay Area now has a WNBA team back where she grew up in the form of the Golden State Valkyries.

And while Ionescu is pumped for women’s basketball in her hometown, she doesn’t plan on moving back.

“I’m a part of a great organization here that drafted me and for me, obviously, it’s where I want to be for the rest of my career,” Ionescu told the New York Post.

The Liberty are the only WNBA team Ionescu has ever known first-hand.

She was the No. 1 overall pick in 2020 out of Oregon by the Liberty.

In 155 career games, she has averaged 16.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

Ionescu is a three-time All Star, and in 2024, she helped the Liberty claim the WNBA championship.

This season, Ionescu has raised her game to another level and is pouring in 20 points per game.

The Valkyries may call before her career is out, but it doesn’t seem like Ionescu is in a rush to leave.

The West Coast star likes the East Coast. Who could’ve seen that coming?

The Liberty will happily take a future that includes Ionescu, that’s for sure.
