Sabrina Ionescu is already preparing for the busy month ahead, including her first Olympic games during the break from the WNBA season.
After the Liberty’s important game against the Connecticut Sun, Ionescu will head to Phoenix for the WNBA All-Star game followed by a trip to Paris.
“It’s a little overwhelming with everything going on, but I’m grateful for the opportunities,” Ionescu mentioned during the Liberty’s morning shootaround.
As the youngest member of the United States women’s national team at 26 years old, Ionescu feels the pressure of meeting expectations at the Olympic stage.
Teammate Breanna Stewart, a two-time gold medalist, has advised Ionescu to expect unforgettable moments at the opening ceremony.
Head coach Sandy Brondello also emphasized the importance of enjoying the experience while remaining focused on the games.
Despite her lack of experience, Ionescu sees this opportunity as a chance to learn from WNBA veterans and contribute to the future of the women’s national team.
Ionescu mentioned feeling strange about not playing under Brondello but joked about calling out play calls during the Olympics.
In addition to Ionescu, Stewart, and Brondello representing the United States, Liberty’s Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich will play for Germany in their women’s basketball Olympic debut.
The Liberty has a total of five Olympians, with the Aces having the most representation with six players heading to Paris.
