Saquon Barkley made a remarkable debut for Philadelphia by scoring three touchdowns, leading the Eagles to a 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Friday night in the first NFL game held in South America.
Jordan Love, the Packers quarterback, suffered an injury and had to leave the field in the final moments of the game. Despite his efforts to advance the Packers, Love was tackled by Jalen Carter and Josh Sweat, resulting in an awkward pass to Josh Jacobs and an unfortunate landing. Love, who recently signed a lucrative contract extension, was unable to continue and was replaced by Malik Willis. The game ended with Willis being sacked by Zack Baun, preventing a potential game-changing play. Packers coach Matt LaFleur provided no updates on Love’s condition post-game.
Barkley showcased his skills by rushing for 109 yards and scoring on an 18-yard reception as well as runs of 11 and two yards. After spending six seasons with the New York Giants, Barkley signed a three-year deal with Philadelphia and became the first player since Terrell Owens in 2004 to score three touchdowns in his Eagles debut.
Jalen Hurts had a solid performance, completing 20 of 34 passes for 278 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. AJ Brown made significant contributions with five receptions for 119 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown.
Jayden Reed of Green Bay scored on a 33-yard jet sweep and a 70-yard reception, the longest touchdown pass of Love’s career. Reed’s performance included a standout move that left the Eagles defense scrambling.
Reed’s performance made history as he became the first player since Jim Brown in 1963 to have a 30-plus yard touchdown catch and run in a season opener.
Despite an early touchdown being nullified due to a penalty, Reed finished the game with four catches for 138 yards.
Love completed 17 of 34 passes for 260 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception.
