The Seattle Seahawks received two fines for what the NFL deemed unsporting actions in last Thursday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Running back Kenneth Walker III was docked $11,593 for a called taunting penalty in the second quarter. He was tackled by Kei’trel Clark, who held onto his leg after the play was over. Walker responded by throwing the ball at him, which led to a penalty that helped take Seattle out of field goal range.
As noted by Tom Pelissero, no fine or flag for Clark. In fact, no one from the Cardinals received any fines. This was not “taunting” by Walker, but more of a frustration penalty. In the interest of the classification, that’s the penalty he was given.
The other fine was for Devon Witherspoon, who also lost $11,593 for a taunting penalty for an incident three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Ernest Jones IV did a heck of a job to prevent Spoon from getting a taunting penalty as it happened, but the NFL still took notice and sent a letter to Devon after he stood over Cardinals TE Trey McBride.
The NFL has placed an emphasis on taunting this year, so… guess we’ll all just have to deal with it.
