The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers have new head coaches and major roster changes, and they will kick off the 2024 NFL preseason against each other at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
After exceeding expectations by finishing 9-8 and earning a wild card berth in 2022, the Seahawks stayed at 9-8 in 2023 and missed the playoffs. It was a disappointing ending to a frustrating season, and Pete Carroll’s days as Seahawks head coach are now over. Mike Macdonald, who guided the Baltimore Ravens to the top defense in the NFL, is going from coordinator to first-time head coach. While the Seahawks did not heavily tinker with their offense (apart from a new interior offensive line), the defense will see new inside linebackers, new starting safeties (albeit with Julian Love getting a promotion), and a new first-round phenom defensive lineman in Byron Murphy II.
As for the Chargers, Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL after winning a national championship at Michigan. The Chargers were well below .500 and last in the AFC West in 2023, costing Brandon Staley his job. Justin Herbert remains the starting QB, but running back Austin Ekeler, wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, tight end Gerald Everett, and linebackers Kenneth Murray and Eric Kendricks have all gone to other teams. It’s a new-look Chargers, but will it be the same old Chargers in terms of results?
As ever, it’s the preseason, so you’re going to be seeing a lot of reserves playing, and reserves to those reserves, but we will see some starters play in Week 1 according to Mike Macdonald, as well as the rookie class. Don’t expect Geno Smith to be out there or most of the key offensive players, however.
