Sean O'Malley requires surgery following title defeat
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Unfortunately, Sean O’Malley’s streak of bad luck continues to grow. Following reports of an injury leading up to his title fight at UFC 306, it has now been confirmed that ‘Suga’ will need surgery.

O’Malley played a significant role in the rise of the bantamweight division, making it one of the most thrilling weight classes in the sport. Now, the popular fighter will have to work his way back up after losing his belt over the weekend.

Despite Merab Dvalishvili’s impressive performance, many fans noticed that something wasn’t quite right with Sean O’Malley during the fight.

Rumors have only intensified following confirmation that the Arizona native was dealing with an injury throughout his training camp for UFC 306.

Reports indicate that Sean O’Malley will undergo surgery in October for a torn labrum in his hip.

This setback will likely keep the former champion sidelined for several months, dashing any hopes of a quick return in late 2024 or early 2025.

Despite expectations for a closer fight, Merab Dvalishvili put on a dominant performance.

His complete control over the 25-minute bout resulted in the Georgian capturing UFC gold on his first attempt.

What was wrong with Sean O’Malley at UFC 306?

As mentioned earlier, fans noticed that Sean O’Malley wasn’t himself at UFC 306, so what went awry?

Despite appearing to struggle in the octagon, O’Malley claimed that everything went according to plan leading up to the event in Las Vegas.

Aside from his injury, the 29-year-old stated that he felt good going into the fight and didn’t face any unexpected issues with weight cutting.

O’Malley will now have to focus on recuperating from his upcoming surgery in October.
