The New York Liberty secured victory over the Minnesota Lynx by a score of 67-62 on Oct. 20, claiming the WNBA championship for the 2024 season. Jaylyn Sherrod made history by becoming the second former Alabama high school player to join a title-winning team in the league.
Following in the footsteps of DeWanna Bonner from Fairfield, the former Ramsay High School standout now finds herself on this prestigious list. Bonner achieved WNBA glory with the Phoenix Mercury in 2009 and 2014. Though Bonner’s Connecticut Sun fell short to the Lynx in this year’s WNBA semifinals, she proudly paved the way for Sherrod.
Sherrod also came close to capturing a state championship with Ramsay, as they narrowly lost to Hazel Green in overtime during the AHSAA Class 6A girls’ basketball championship game for the 2018 season.
Ramsay recently paid tribute to Sherrod for her outstanding basketball career, which included a successful stint at Colorado before making her mark in the WNBA. Sherrod’s No. 00 jersey was retired by Ramsay.
Reflecting on her journey, Sherrod expressed gratitude for the blessings and opportunities she’s received. She acknowledged the significance of her achievements and remained thankful for the experiences she’s had along the way.
Sherrod played a pivotal role in Colorado’s success, helping the Buffaloes reach the Sweet Sixteen in 2023 and 2024. As their point guard, she averaged 12.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. Unfortunately, their NCAA tournament runs were halted by Iowa and their standout player, Caitlin Clark.
Despite going undrafted in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Sherrod impressed during training camp with the Liberty. After initially being released, an injury opportunity led to her signing a contract with the team, eventually securing a spot for the rest of the season.
In the No. 0 jersey, Sherrod showcased her skills by contributing 19 points, three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one blocked shot in 10 regular-season games for the Liberty, followed by two postseason appearances.
The Liberty’s championship victory coincided with Sherrod’s 23rd birthday, adding an extra layer of celebration to her special day.
During the Ramsay ceremony, Sherrod offered inspiring words, urging others to persevere despite facing rejection. She emphasized the importance of persistence and determination in achieving one’s goals.
