Rome, Ga. – On day two of the ITA Conference Masters Championships, the first NCAA Individual Championship berths were decided as eight singles players claimed their ticket to Waco, Texas after reaching the singles main draw semifinals here in Rome.
For the men, Sebastian Dominko (Notre Dame), Thomas Paulsell (Georgia), Anton Arzhankin (Western Michigan), and Tiago Silva (Pacific) each did what it took to reach the singles semifinals and punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships.
Representing two non-power four conferences, Arzhankin and Silva both reach prestigious new heights for each of their respective programs as Arzhankin is the first Western Michigan player to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 1977 and Silva is the first player in Pacific men’s tennis history to reach the NCAA Championships.
On the women’s side of play, today’s qualifiers each capped off extended fall seasons in Rome by finally getting across the finish line to advance to Waco. Earning the four automatic berths on Friday were Sofia Johnson (Old Dominion), Katja Wiersholm (California), Oyinlomo Quadre (FIU), and Gracie Epps (Oklahoma State).
Johnson and Quadre each had strong showings at the ITA All-American Championships but fell just short in Cary. However, not losing focus on their goals, each looked focused and determined to continue their fall season over these past few days, cruising through the completion to advance to the semifinals.
Doubles play has seen top seeds thrive on the men’s side of play, while for the women, there has been much more equity with two of the four semifinalists being unseeded teams.
Tomorrow’s semifinal matches will secure two team’s spots in the NCAA Doubles Championships, while the losers of tomorrow’s matches will face off on Sunday to see which team will claim the last spot in Waco.
