During every deadline season, numerous relievers change teams. Virtually every contending team looks to improve their bullpen, whether it’s by upgrading their seventh or eighth man or adding high-leverage arms. Teams out of playoff contention are usually open to trading their relievers, especially those in the middle innings.
This summer, there are several notable names on the trade market. Impending free agent closers like Carlos Estévez and Tanner Scott, who play for struggling teams, are expected to be moved. Affordable rental middle relievers such as Yimi GarcÃa, John Brebbia, Luis GarcÃa, and others on fringe contender teams could also be traded for mid-tier prospects. The availability of players like Hunter Harvey, Kyle Finnegan, and Michael Kopech, who are under team control through 2025, has sparked trade rumors. However, the A’s standout closer Mason Miller, with five years of team control left, would only be traded for a significant offer.
In addition to the obvious trade candidates, teams will also be scouting for hidden gems who may not have been on the radar initially. Past deadlines have seen controllable relievers like Scott Effross, Colin Holderman, Jose Cuas, Peter Strzelecki, and Manuel RodrÃguez being moved unexpectedly.
Although predicting unlikely trade candidates is challenging, there are a few bullpen pieces with a small but real chance of being traded in the coming weeks. While most of these players are likely to stay put, there is always a chance for a last-minute deal.
